In 1972, BMW also wanted to produce sports cars suitable for motorsport. BMW then decided to draw on the expertise of the Italian sports car manufacturer Lamborghini and have the BMW Turbo developed there. However, as this led to disagreements, BMW wanted to build the car itself and BMW Motorsport GmbH was founded. Initially, the car was built for use in rallies. Thereupon the models succeeded in the breakthrough, the BMW 3.0 CSL was with six European championship titles the most successful touring car of the 1970s. Then in 1980, the first engines were built for use in Formula 1 and Nelson Piquet won the 1st World Championship title in 1883. Meanwhile, the vehicles of BMW M GmbH are successful in motorsports worldwide and the three-color "M-Design" of light blue, purple and red serves as a distinctive feature.
