The character by Bill Finger and Bob Kane first appeared in the first comic of the Batman series in 1940. Although Catwoman was originally introduced as Batman’s opponent, she is neither totally good nor clearly bad, but follows her own moral principles (e.g. she never kills.) So she sometimes even takes sides with Batman.
